And Now For Sports…
On Sunday, April 12, 2015 - Sleepy Hollow had TWO unified basketball teams compete at the Special Olympics Regional Unified Basketball Tournament at SUNY New Paltz.
The first was our Sleepy Hollow Pioneer Unified Team made up of Pioneer athletes: Brenda Alfaro, Sebastian Leiva, and Ryan Steele - along with SHADE interns/Unified Partners: Katy Bender, Mikey Fortugno, Kai Bertolacci, Jordan Dorn, Jack Steuer and Jack Weitzner, and coached by Bonnie Berry and Leana Peltier (our newest and fantastic addition!). This team took fourth place in their division. They played extremely hard against much older and well established teams and we are SO proud of them
The second team was TEAM USA who will be competing in L.A. in July at the Special Olympics World Summer Games. This team is a combination team between Sleepy Hollow and Brewster High Schools. The Sleepy Hollow athletes who are part of this team are athletes:Felix Veloz and Min Li, and Unified Partners: Hunter Burnett and Brendan Murphy, and coached by Kim Kaczmarek and Donna Schneider (from Brewster). This team made it to the division championship game and earned a silver medal with a game that was tied until the last 1.6 seconds when Taconic made a basket at the buzzer. Although it was a tough defeat - the team played incredibly with the score being tied most of the game.
Coach K., Coach Berry and Coach Pelt are extremely proud of all of the Sleepy Hollow athletes who have bonded together as ONE team through Special Olympics and Project UNIFY. They represented our school and community magnificently!!!
