On Friday, September 2nd, the Varsity Girls Soccer Team won their first game of the season in a back and forth battle against Eastchester. The girls went ahead early in the first half when Callie Derechin scored on a brilliant pass from Emma Cusanelli. Eastchester equalized shortly after on a free kick that was perfectly placed. Sleepy Hollow took the lead again later in the half when Emma Cusanelli played a perfect ball through the defensive line, into the path of Emily Rodriguez, who beat the goalkeeper with style and confidence. A relentless Eastchester team leveled the score just before half time. Midway through the second half Sleepy Hollow took the lead again when Emily Rodriguez beat two defenders and squared a ball across the path of Emma Cusanelli as she sprinted into the box. Calm and collected under pressure, she passed the ball into the goal to secure the win for the team. Defensively the team looked solid, giving Eastchester only a handful of chances at goal. Lavese Gilchrest played outstanding in goal for the Horsemen ladies, recorded 8 saves, and played a big part in protecting the lead late in the second half. Come see the girls on Wednesday as they take on Saunders, away at 4:45.
The Boys Varsity soccer team drew its first game of the year against sectional power Eastchester on Friday, September 2nd. The final score was 0-0. It was a very physical game and was a good performance by the Sleepy Hollow players. Most of the game was seesaw of possession in the neutral zone. In the first half the boys picked up the pace after a slow start to the game. The second half was played well by both teams with each team getting its share of scoring opportunities but could not capitalize on them and the game went to sudden death overtime. Both teams again had opportunities to end the game but to no avail. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Laub had an amazing game in goal with 11 saves and was the man of the match. Andrew had 4 game saving saves that should have been finished by Eastchester. In addition to Andrew the entire back line for Hollow defense played well. They were lead by Senior Captains Ethan Wilens and Michael Illescas and also include seniors David Friedman and Alexis Zhunio. Junior Hugo Carpio also had a great game in the midfield. The next game for the boys is a home game against Pelham High School on Tuesday, September 6th. Go Hollow!!
